Our History

photoThe Community Sailing Center has provided the Burlington community public access to recreational and educational opportunities on Lake Champlain for the last 14 years. Below is a brief history.

1993 Marcel Beaudin, Dale Hyerstay and others had a dream to create a public sailing venue for those people that would normally not have access to the Lake.

December 13 - Burlington City Council adopted a resolution authorizing the Waterfront Commission to enter into an agreement with another organization to establish and operate a launch facility for sailboats and non-motorized boats on the City's Moran Generating Plant property, in order to improve and increase access to Lake Champlain for boaters.
1994 Everyone devoted their time to fund raising and infrastructure improvements - hoist and ramps.
1995 Our first year of full operations - storage and launching facility.
1997 We received an anonymous donation to buy 6 new and 6 used sailboats, which enabled us to conduct our first classes with 12 kids from the King Street Youth Center.
1998 The Sailing Center was awarded "Outstanding Seasonal Program" from the Community Sailing Council of US Sailing.

The Sailing Center received a major gift from the McConnell family to honor Mike McConnell, son and brother. With this money we started an 8-10 year old sailing program buying 6 bright yellow Escapes, life jackets. Since then the McConnell Family and friends have continued to fund the Mike McConnell Scholarship Fund.
